「老」の字は、中国では「尊敬する」という意味で使われています。日本では、ただ「年をとった」というふうに捉えられています。だから、イメージがあまりよくありません。
中国流に、老人、イコール尊敬できる人、と思われたいものです。

一人ひとりがそういう「老人」になることを目指して、いくつになっても衰えないクリエイティブな能力を発揮できるように努めましょう。それが、「老人を尊敬する社会」を醸成することにつながります。八十、九十になってもなお、冒険心を持って色々なことにチャレンジして、社会の「老人観」を変えていきましょう。

英訳（English translation）

The character "Rou" is used in China to mean "respect." In Japan, it is simply regarded as "old". Therefore, the impression is not very good.
Like China, we want old people to be considered respectable.

Let's strive to be able to demonstrate creative abilities that will not decline no matter how old we are, with the aim of becoming such a respectable "old man" for each and every one of us. That leads to the fostering of a "society that respects the elderly."
